What Is A Good Golf Score?

The question of what is a good golf score can be surprisingly difficult to answer, depending on your level of skill, your handicap and the course you are playing on. For many weekend golfers, the score is unimportant and the focus is more on simply hitting a few good shots and enjoying the game.

Golf holes are allocated a par, which is the standard number of shots a golfer should take to play the hole. Holes have pars of 3,4 or 5 and the pars are then added up to give a par for the golf course. So a course with a par of 72 shots means that it is possible to play the course in 72 shots. Shooting a par round is difficult for most amateur golfers; it means that most greens must be two putted, the out of bounds, water hazards and sand traps must be avoided and you basically have to play a flawless round of golf.

A golfer’s handicap is calculated based on how many strokes above par he routinely takes; if you shoot 80 on a par 72 course, you might have a handicap of 8 and if you had a handicap of 8 and shot a 71, that would be a good score. Two golfers with different handicaps playing against each other would have to make some allowance in the score for the fact that one player is better than the other.

Golf Score

Professional golfers do not have a handicap allotted to them and are considered to be scratch. For many professionals, a round of golf shot under par is considered to be good, and all professionals consider a round in the mid 60s to be a good golf score, especially in a major championship, or on a particularly challenging course. The yardage of a course can also determine what might be considered to be a good score; the longer the course, the better a score in the 60s looks.

However, for many weekend golfers who are unlikely to ever shoot a round of golf in the 60s, breaking 80 is often a goal; for those who consider themselves a real duffer, a score less than 100 is often the goal.  If you want to know more about ladies golf including golf bags for women, visit East Coast Golf Sales.
